Introducing It’s Private

Why did we start this project?
When the idea of creating a production centered on domestic violence was first introduced, there was no hesitation—both because of the urgency and potential impact of the theme, and because it offered the opportunity to initiate a new artistic collaboration. Coming from distinct dance lineages and lived experiences, the prospect of creating together—and being challenged in unfamiliar ways—was immediately compelling.
At its core, It’s Private is a community activation project. The term is intentional: the work is designed to extend beyond the stage and engage the community at a deeper, more sustained level. Using dance, writing, research, and conversation to address intimate partner violence (IPV) in the South Asian community, the work can grow in various directions.
The concepts we’re engaging with don’t exist in isolation, and neither can the framework used to explore them.
Rather than positioning the directors or artists as experts, or attempting to offer clean resolutions to deeply interwoven and complex realities, the project centers inquiry. It asks: what becomes possible when art and research are placed in dialogue—when creative practice becomes a tool to surface community knowledge and move, however incrementally, toward change.
